Reported Speech

 Segundo Periodo - 6 de abril

In English, we use Reported Speech to tell someone what another person said. When we do this, we usually move the tense "one step back" because the statement was made in the past.


1. The Core Rule: Tense Backshifting

When the reporting verb (like said or told) is in the past, the main verb in the sentence usually changes its tense.

Direct Speech

Reported Speech (Backshift)

Present Simple: "I work hard."

Past Simple: He said he worked hard.

Present Continuous: "I am eating."

Past Continuous: He said he was eating.

Past Simple: "I bought a car."

Past Perfect: He said he had bought a car.

Present Perfect: "I have finished."

Past Perfect: He said he had finished.

Will: "I will help you."

Would: He said he would help me.

Can: "I can swim."

Could: He said he could swim.

  1. "I can swim across the lake," the boy claimed.

  2. "We must leave the party now," my parents said.

  3. "I am going to visit my grandmother tomorrow," Clara told us.

  4. "I bought this book here yesterday," Mark explained.

  5. "You may use my phone," the manager said to me.
